Sony Ericsson Announces Eco-friendly Phones

A few days ago, we informed you that Sony Ericsson was about to showcase its first commercial eco-friendly products. And so it  happened! The company announced its environment-cautious C901 GreenHeart and Naite, plus the MH300 GreenHeart headset, which comes bundled with the first one. Both handsets are candybars, with the C901 GreenHeart housing a 2.2-inch QVGA display, in addition to 5-megapixel, xenon flash camera. The manufacturer has used reduced packaging materials, recycled plastics, optimized display light and waterborne paint in order to reduce the lifetime CO2 footprint of the device by 15%. The Naite also has its CO2 footprint brought down by 15% thanks to smaller packaging, recycled plastics, optimized display brightness and a low-power charger. The Naite sports a 2.2-inch QVGA display and 2MP camera. Sony Ericsson has cut down on paper usage with over 90%, so do not expect to find User Manual in the box of either of these, there will be in-phone e-manuals instead.

The C901 GreenHeart is quad-band GSM, dual-band 3G phone that will become available on select markets in Q2, while the Naite is a quad-band GSM, single-band 3G that is scheduled for a Q3 launch. Both handsets have American 3G versions.

Here are pictures of the Naite and the C01 GreenHeart respectively:

W302 Review

Alright,  so I haven’t posted in awhile since homework got the best of me.   So to make up for it, here is SE Weekly’s first phone review.

The W302:

The W302 is an entry-level walkman phone targeted at younger consumers.  Its design consists of a sleek metal front, and plastic back, and looks very similar to the Sony Ericsson W890.  It is quite light, yet feels sturdy in the hand.

The phone has a standard 2″ display but sadly suffers from a the low resolution of 176×220 pixels.  The screen has apparently fallen victim to it’s budget and unfortunately it is virtually unusable in direct sunlight.

All navigational keys and the number pad are quite small, but are easy to press.  The camera button and the volume rocker are located on its right side, while the left side has the walkman button and the charger/earphone port. This layout is identical to that of the W890 and feels just as comfortable.

The interface on the W302 is the same as most Sony Ericssons and the same applies for the camera interface, minus a few extra options.

Because this is a budget phone, the camera leaves something to be desired.  It’s 2mp, and doesn’t take the greatest of photos.

The walkman player is identical to that found on the W350, which has a few features and looks fairly simplistic.  The loudspeaker on the phone is relatively weak and delivers distorted sounds.   However, playback through the earbuds provided with the phone is more than acceptable.  The W350 also comes with an FM radio and TrackID, which is typical of most walkman phones.

As far as  performance goes, call quality is mediocre, leaving a mechanical sounding voice on the other end.  The battery life is decent ( about7 hours of continuous talk time and 300 hours on standby), but relatively poor when listening to music (about 10 hours).

To sum things up, the W302 is a decent budget phone that is more suitable for children and teenagers since it delivers decent audio quality and looks fairly stylish.
